We’re not scared of many things. The Eagles’ play-off chances. The Polar Vortex (thank you, El Niño!). Getting to the bar too late for happy hour. But what’s truly scary – and awesome – are the Halloween activities that some of our favorite spots have on deck for this year. Check it out (if you dare…)
Let’s start with a little off-season road trip to Stone Harbor, NJ. No, we’re not talking about donning a bathing suit (which, yes, does sound a little scary), but rather, indulging in a family-friendly Halloween party or an adults-only affair at The Reeds at Shelter Haven. This Sunday (10/25), The Reeds welcomes families for Hallow-Reeds, a day-long brunch party perfect for kids, with a lavish buffet spread and fun Halloween-themed movies, plus a magician performing tricks and making balloon animals. Costumes, naturally, are encouraged. The following weekend (10/31), spring for a sitter and head back for an adults-only Halloween Cocktail Party, featuring a DJ and dancing; on Halloween night, The Reeds will offer an affordable cash bar, plus late-night specials at Buckets Cantina and even a tempting overnight package, including admission to the party, comped cocktail tickets and appetizers, a breakfast voucher and – best of all?? – a late check-out for just $199.
If you prefer your fear Philadelphia-based, don’t despair: London Grill is offering their popular Fright and Bite Package, including a three-course meal followed by Eastern State Penitentiary’s ghoulish Terror Behind the Walls haunted house. For $50 per adult and $28 per child 7 to 11 (under 7 not admitted!), visitors can park at the Philadelphia Zoo, ride a haunted “ghost bus” to dinner, complete with spooky stories about past inhabitants of Fairmount Park, dine, then enjoy “quick pass” access to the penitentiary. Creepy cocktails and “test tube shots” of Vampire’s Blood and Zombie Guts (gulp) not included but available a la carte for the bold – and those who need a little liquid courage to face the ghouls. Click for tickets.
Finally, what’s Halloween without a pumpkin fix? We got ours early and often this year thanks to Iron Hill Brewery’s Pumpkin Ale, available in cans since September and perfect for pairing with their Pumpkin Sriracha Wings. These goodies will only be available through Halloween (10/31), so if you have a hankering for some seasonal flavor, get to Iron Hill before they’re gone like ghosts in the night.
