You know what we at love about Germany? (Besides the delectable quads of their World Cup-winning soccer team and their eagerness to mark every possible occasion with a beer?) They know how to party, and they’ll throw a festival for just about anything.
Case in point: this month, they’re celebrating the arrival of spring with not one, but two fests, at Brauhaus Schmitz. All month long, it’s Spargelfest, a party for that humblest of vegetables, asparagus, whose harvest season marks the delicious end of winter; then, on Saturday, May 2, Brauhaus joins the rest of South Street’s Spring Festival with Maifest, a day-long indoor-outdoor beer-stravaganza. Told you: these Germans have the right idea. Eat vegetables. Drink beer. Welcome the spring with open arms (and open taps!)
For more information on Spargelfest dishes, many of which you can also make at home thanks to Chef Jeremy Nolen’s new cookbook, New German Cooking (click to buy), or to book tickets for Maifest, please visit www.brauhausschmitz.com.
