It’s nearly St. Patrick’s Day, and if the thought of green beer makes you think, “Erin Go Blarghh,” well, you’re not alone. Team ProTip knows there’s more to the holiday than temporary shamrock tattoos, and we’ve picked a few of our favorite ways to celebrate the Irish: every bit as magically delicious as Lucky Charms, but sans the pesky leprechaun paraphernalia.
Whether you plan to venture out on the holiday itself or prefer to lay low while the banks of the Schuylkill and Delaware overflow with an emerald tide of out-of-towners in too-small green t-shirts, you’ll need to eat. Good thing Jake’s Sandwich Board is running their Irish-inflected “Happy Out” Reuben all month long. The name translates from Irish to “very happy,” and you will be, too, with this hand-carved corned beef sandwich, topped with Russian dressing, Swiss cheese and apple sauerkraut on a long roll.
Of course, St. Patrick’s Day is something of a drinking holiday, so we’re told, so if you must get your beer fix, skip the unnaturally tinted lite beer and head for Iron Hill, where their Irish-style O’Sullivan Stout is on draught from Friday, March 13 until Tuesday, March 17. Enjoy it all on its own or in an Ore’Sullivan, their playful take on a black and tan featuring O’Sullivan Stout and their signature Ore House IPA.
If it’s a beer and a bite in one place you’re craving, look no farther than London Grill, where Chef Michael McNally will whip up his famous Corned Beef & Cabbage and Colcannon Cakes, perfect as sustenance while sipping a pint of Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout or Sly Fox Seamus Red Ale, both on draught for $4 each all day long.
Whaddaya know? All the festivity; none of the green glitter shamrock antennae. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, indeed!
